Ottawa County, Kansas. The homesteader era. The eastern newspapers of the period promoted the Midwestern frontier as a paradise for settlers. They didn't mention the Indian raids, droughts, grasshopper plagues, and prairie fires that awaited the pioneers. Prairie Tapestry tells the true tales of the visitors and homesteaders of Ottawa County, Kansas - Horace Greeley, Susan B. Anthony, George Washington Carver, and 'Lincoln's Little Girl,' Grace Bedell. The settlers confronted the numerous adversities with a tenacity and resolve that formed the American spirit of today.

Prairie Tapestry A Tale of Kansas Homesteaders and Their Fight for Survival edition by Tom Fleming Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
My mother, age 95, bought me this book and we've been reading the book together. She is in Kansas and I'm in Ohio. This is a wonderful book. My family is from Ottawa County, Kansas. It's an excellent read and coincides with many stories I've heard from my mother and grandparents. I can't wait to go back and retrace some of the author's steps. It was hard to put down!
Since reading Prairie Tapestry, I've traveled to North Central Kansas and have found landmarks mentioned in the book as well as the graves of many of its characters. I've also had the privilege of the meeting the author. Fleming certainly paid attention to his history when writing this novel. It's an exciting historical journey that takes place after the Civil War and includes characters who were native to the land, as well as pioneers and settlers from all over the country and the world. Notable historic figures such as Horace Greeley, George Washington Carver, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton are featured in the book. The true horrors that faced the settlers during that time are brought to life in this wonderful novel, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about the pioneer era and the Plains Indians. It will change the way you think about Kansas.
An exceptional history of the hardships suffered by the early settlers in Ottowa, Kansas
